Job Description

Salary: $55,665 - 114,503 per year Requirements:

  • We require a masters degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related discipline.
  • We require at least 3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • We require that you meet the Secretary of the Interiors Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Preferred qualifications include demonstrated ability to serve as a field director on archaeological studies.
  • Preferred qualifications include comfort working in remote field settings and performing fieldwork outdoors.
  • Preferred qualifications include strong knowledge of Southeast archaeology, with additional U.S. regional familiarity considered an asset.
  • Preferred qualifications include solid command of NEPA, NHPA, and other applicable state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Preferred qualifications include proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Preferred qualifications include excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Preferred qualifications include familiarity with ArcGIS and experience using a range of GPS equipment.
  • Preferred qualifications include specialization in historic archaeology, geoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, lithic analysis, or bioarchaeology.
  • Preferred qualifications include meaningful experience supporting or conducting consultation with Tribal representatives.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience with project budgeting, schedules, deliverable production, and QA/QC tracking.
  • Preferred qualifications include registration as a Professional Archaeologist.

Responsibilities:
  • We lead and contribute to archaeology and cultural resources studies on standalone assignments and within broader multidisciplinary projects.
  • We conduct background research, field surveys, laboratory analysis, and eligibility evaluations.
  • We prepare technical reports and documentation for agency review and SHPO consultation.
  • We apply archaeology expertise and regulatory knowledge to support NEPA and Section 106 compliance, along with state-level requirements where applicable.
  • We conduct archaeological surveys, testing, and data recovery, primarily in the Southeastern U.S. and Mid-Atlantic.
  • We supervise on-call staff in the field, including excavation of close-interval shovel tests and formal excavation units.
  • We provide analysis and writing for environmental regulatory reviews under NEPA, NHPA, and state requirements.
  • We develop technical approaches, analyze findings, document results, and collaborate with colleagues across experience levels.
  • We evaluate resources for National Register of Historic Places eligibility and develop resource management recommendations.
  • We assess project impacts on archaeological and cultural resources.
  • We work with architectural and landscape historians to support an integrated cultural resources approach.
  • We collaborate with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • We may mentor and guide early-career team members.
